Plan, create and communicate ideas and information independently and with others, applying agreed ethical and social protocols (ACTDIP013).

What is it?

Kahoot! Is a fantastic way to introduce technology into the class room. It is an online game-based system that allows individuals to answer questions in the form of multiple choice. The creator of the quiz (this can be either the teacher or student) choices the questions or the quiz type to further develop what they are learning in the classroom. These answer choices are represented using symbols and colours. The questions can include videos, pictures and words.

Kahoot! is typically displayed on a large screen using the teacher account and students answer the questions using their own technological device such as iPads, smartphones or computers.

Students can play individually or in groups and are able to select their individual or group name. Students are rewarded with points on their accuracy and how quick they can answer the questions.

After every question the teacher and students are given the current score board represented in numbers and graphs.

How do I access it?

It is easily accessible through an URL address. Once you as a teacher have accessed this page you can create a free account and create your quiz, survey or discussion. Once this is created, the teacher is given a secret pin once they make the game live. Students access the live game by typing in the pin after accessing the student link. They do not need an account or an application to access the Kahoot! game on their device.

How to use Kahoot…

Kahoot is a free resource that can be used in a variety of different ways to promote social learning within the class and around the globe. This resource is a fun way to engage students in different learning activities and concepts. Students use their own devices to answer multiple choice questions where photos, videos and diagrams can be added. During my teaching, this app was best used with the whole class where discussions are encouraged by showing the students’ responses and ideas on a shared screen. This shared screen shows representation of data in many different ways which encourages computational thinking as students can critically analyse the data. Students can also be encouraged to create their own ‘kahoots’ which promotes creative and critical thinking. By sharing and creating their own ‘kahoots’, students also deepen their understanding of a topic in a fun and engaging way.

A classroom activity using this resource

This is a fun way to encourage our  students to use digital technologies in form of a quiz. This activity can be used for digital comprehension as well as learning new ideas about different cultures and specific learning required by the teacher. The best way to use Kahoot is to reaffirm learning from what you have set the students to learn. I would use this quiz after a lesson, to consolidate learning or for formative assessment.

How to use this resource:

  • Requires internet connection
  • Requires a log in
  • Requires electronic devices such as computers, iPads, Android Tablets and others.
  • Once the teacher has made the quiz, the Kahoot game generates a pin. This pin is a number for the students’ to access and write on their devices to enter the quiz game.
  • Just for some fun, there are random quizzes already made up which is exciting to see what the students know.
  • In order to answer a question, students simply select the shape with the required answer.
  • To create a quiz, tap on the button and add as many questions about the chosen content as required. Simply save the quiz and it is ready to go!
