139571This adorable little robot is the mBot — a do-it-yourself educational robot kit from robotics experts MakeBlock. It is designed to introduce kids and beginners to the field of robotics and programming. Built around the Arduino open-source platform, this easy to use technology is a great way to incorporate science, technology, mathematics and engineering in your classroom.  The mBot kit (starting at $79.95) comes with everything you need to get started. Students can use the easy to follow instructions to construct the robot in less than 20 minutes. They can then use the remote it comes with to immediately start to control their robot or, once the free mBlock software has been downloaded students can use the graphical programming tool to control their robot. This is a great way to introduce and implement a unit of work based on programming and coding or to consolidate students understanding of these topics. Students can plan what they want their robot to do, use programming code blocks with commands to achieve their goal. Students can run the program to test if their robot moves as intended. If not, students can revise their program.

The mechanical body of the mBot is compatible with the MakeBlock platform and most Lego parts.

The drag-and-drop graphical programming software mBlock is based on Scratch 2.0 and provides a quick way for kids to learn coding. You can also switch from graphical to text-based coding using the Arduino IDE environment.

  2. A very thorough and informative blog post! These Mbots are very adorable and what a great introduction to engineering. Although programming is a set of precise rules and instructions I love how the outcome is so endless, as proven with this Mbot’s capabilities to play games and do numerous activities. Very good find!
